“Only one thing is more expensive in the long run than education – no education.”
John F. Kenedy
A new tower for Bautzen
The tower of the University of Cooperative Education has an exciting history. The tower on the building of the University of Cooperative Education was built as part of the new construction of the “Technical School for Mechanical Engineering” in the early 1950s. In its design, the tower of the University of Cooperative Education resembles a typical church tower of this period. It was completed in 1954 – and that was exactly where the difficulty lay!
Faith issues complicate tower construction in Bautzen
In the period of planning and construction of the building, the GDR government did not welcome any turn towards the church. Thus, behind the scenes, a hot’back and forth’ about the shape and design of the tower broke out.
A School with a Tower
Finally, the political small-mindedness was defeated and the tower of the University of Cooperative Education appears to be a victory for common sense and a prosperous future. Since then, the building has always housed school facilities with a technical profile. In 1991, the Bautzen State Study Academy was established in the buildings, including the tower.
